I am a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Interactive Media Design programme at Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. In October 2006, I completed a PhD degree at Northumbria University, on developing a practice-led framework to promote the practise and application of typography across different media.

I have published regularly since 2003 and my research is bound by the common theme of exploring and identifying how designers develop and improve their own practice. I am interested in the development of design-specific research methods, particularly human-centred research methods for design processes and developing an approach for graphic design education in view of emergent media. My current research is concerned with understanding how designers research and gain new knowledge, particularly in the area of ‘designerly inquiry’ and its resultant processes and methods. A simple way of describing my area of interest is ‘research on design research’. My output can be broadly categorised into three areas:

  • A ‘designerly’ way of Researching
  • Interdisciplinary Learning
  • User-centred Value
